Our Workshops
We’re extremely proud that all of our Whitby Jet jewellery is made in the North of England. As we mentioned we have two workshops. One right here in Whitby and the other in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Our jewellery specialists work with modern machinery as well as traditional hand tools to create exquisite collections. All of our craftsmen and women are highly trained. They know a lot about the beautiful gemstone and how to handcraft Jet in to stunning pieces of jewellery. Our workshops are clean, safe and happy places to work. It is very important that our creative spaces are a safe environment to work in following all the health and safety guidance we can find.
The Victorian Workshops
The over crowded, dust filled workshops during the Victorian times were not so nice yet the work produced was exceptional. In Jet’s heyday, there were about 200 Whitby Jet’s workshops in our seaside town. It’s difficult to imagine how so many could fit in such a small place. 1400 men worked in the Jet business when the black British gemstone was so popular. That was approximately the third of the population at that time.
Making Whitby Jet
If you’re interested in how our Whitby Jet jewellery is made, you’ve come to the right place.
- Every piece of Whitby is checked for any faults. It is very important that this stage is not missed out. If any flaws are discovered once the piece is made, we will be unable to sell it wasting a lot of time and money.
- Once the piece has been inspected, one of our jewellery specialists will trim the stone to the shape needed. We have many different designs from hearts to spiders and everything in between.
- Next our specialists will create the shape required using a grinder and linishing machine.
- Once this is complete they trim the surface to ensure it’s lovely and neat, smooth too.
- We then polish the piece of Whitby Jet to ensure that it has the high sheen that is loved so much.
Our Jewellery Design Service
As much as we offer a wide variety of designs for all tastes, we understand that there may be an idea that you would love to wear that doesn't currently exist. We love it when customers get in touch with a concept that they would like for us to create. Our expert team have the skill and knowledge to make just about anything so don’t be shy. The process is pretty easy, we’ll ask for you to pop in store to go through all the details of your piece. We then give you a time frame of when your jewellery will be complete.
Another option that we offer is to remodel old favourites that haven’t been worn for a long time.
